Welcome to the Gold Rush Country School Page!
We are moving into the spring of our second year at our beautiful Sullivan Creek campus. The 500 year old oak trees are sprouting new growth, with yellow daffodils pushing up from underneath. A pair of peregrine falcons has been spotted perching on the branches and various deer can be seen snacking on the acorns below.
So far, our gentle winter has treated our animals well, with the exception of a few below- freezing mornings which necessitated having the students break the ice in the animals’ water trough. We now have a basketball floating in it to prevent complete freezing. Ms. Divine could be seen Valentine’s morning blowing hot air on the pen locks since they were frozen shut.
Our menagerie remains steady with 9 laying hens, 4 pygmy goats, 3 cuddly rabbits (and a partridge in a pear tree). We have three nice new rabbit hutches which remain out of reach of the rambunctious goats. Shortly joining us will be a churro sheep purchased from Cover’s Apple Ranch. The latter is part of a “Sheep to Shawl” unit taught by Ms. Divine. After receiving a $1,000 grant from Front Porch through the Sonora Area Foundation, we have purchased supplies which have allowed students to work with a grease fleece, wash wool, dye it, card it, spin it, felt it and weave it. See Union Democrat article Thurs. Feb. 16:

Other farm and garden projects this year have included building a compost pile next to the garden, a unit on grains (history, nutrition, cooking mythology, music and planting winter wheat), herpetology (with live snakes), ichthyology (with a field trip to Knight’s Ferry to see the salmon run), and the Sheep to Shawl unit. Coming up are farm and garden units on recycling, insects, apiary studies and companion planting.
We have begun Friday tutoring classes from 9:00-12:00 allowing students who need extra help in reading and math to come in for small group tutoring.
Teachers continue to formulate and teach exciting hands-on lessons which not only meet state standards, but have culminated in field trips including apple farms, caves, local theater, and state historic parks.
Please see our list of upcoming STARS testing, events and field trips.
Outside resources:
www.eyecanlearn.com - These activities are offered as a fun way to help sharpen "learning-related" visual skills that are critical for success in school. If a child has deficits in visual information processing, these simple exercises alone are not sufficient to correct a problem. Please do not confuse these exercises with vision therapy.
www.starfall.com A free public service to teach children to read with phonics. Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.
www.wildmath.com - Math facts site.
