Gold Rush Charter School takes many of the learning experiences outside of the classroom. Field trips are an important part of the class that every student is encouraged to go on. Below is the list of annual field trips. The date and time will be posted as they are planned so look here often.

Grades: 7 - 12, and all Science Discovery and Science Exploration students are encouraged to come.

Good Heavens! Spend a day at the Chabot Space and Science Center in the
Oakland hills learning about the stars and planets. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the IMAX presentation of “Cosmic Voyage” and the fascinating planetarium show “Search for Life.” Students and adults will participate in a variety of hands-on astronomy activities.

The students must leave from Gold Rush Charter School no later than 7:30 AM in order to get to the Exploration in time for the activities.

Spend a day at The Tech Museum in San Jose. A place devoted to inspiring the innovator in everyone that visits. Truly hands-on and interactive exhibits, divided among themed galleries, offer students a truly memorable experience. The Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater and various unique museum programs make a visit
to the bright, mango-colored Tech one you won't soon forget.

Ski trip at Dodge Ridge!!

Be at Dodge Ridge by 8:00 AM

In order to take advantage of the group discount, we need  to have a group of 10 or more students. Youth package (age 6 - 12) is $30 per student. Teen package (age 13 - 19) is $36 per student. The package price includes:   ~ lift ticket   ~ ALL NEW rental equipment and lessons. Each student will also receive a free $8.00 lunch voucher. This field trip will be limited to grades 6 - 12.

Please turn in your permission slip with your payment before Thursday, January 22, 2009.

CALIFORNIA GEOLOGY EXPLORATIONS  

March 30 - April 2, 2009

Grades 9 - 12.

This program focuses on the geology of California with a special emphasis on the tectonics and paleontology of California’s Southern San Joaquin Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges.

In the module “I Was Just Petrified,” students visit several fossil sites to gain an understanding of California’s past ecosystems. Students visit a section of the San Andreas fault in the module “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” The politics and ecology of California’s water battle is investigated in the module “Water Fight!,” Other modules include “Black Gold,” “Please, Can I Get a Straw?,” “Ecology of Farming,” and “I Need a Drink!”

Yosemite National Park Exploration

April 27 - 30, 2009.

This field trip is designed for students who are enrolled in Earth Science and Biology. This program focuses on the natural history, geology and ecology of Yosemite National Park. In the module “Manage It,” public attitudes towards wildlife and its management  are examined. Students study the characteristics of local wild flowers to determine their identity in the module “Do You Have the Key?” Students examine the adaptations of plants and animals to alpine ecosystems in the module “Living High.” Aquatic insects and their ecology are investigated in the module “Water World.” The module “Something’s Burning” lets students look at the positive and negative effects of forest fires. Other modules include “What’s Next?,” “Deer Dilemma,” “A Wild Fish Story,” and “Just Try’n To Get By.”

COASTAL EXPLORATIONS – MONTEREY

May 30 - June 5, 2009  

This trip is designed for students that are enrolled in Biology and Integrated grades. This program focuses on the natural history and ecology of the Central California coast and scientific research. Students study the unique ecology of Elkhorn Slough and learn the natural history of local residents in the module “Life in the Slough.” The module, “Elephant Seals” allows students a chance to study up close the amazing world of the breeding elephant seal colony at Ano Nuevo. The module “Monarch Convention” focuses on the interesting life history of the monarch butterfly. Students are exposed to the exciting world of scientific research in the module “Questions” at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Other modules include “Save Our Bay,” “Stories in Stone,” “Sea Searching,” and “Life Tech.”
